CNC turning is a manufacturing process suited best for creating cylindrical parts. The most common example of a turned part is a shaft. The abbreviation CNC refers to computer numerical control, meaning that all the actions are performed automatically according to the CAD files uploaded to the CNC lathe.
CNC lathes cut the shape by spinning the workpiece. The cutting tool is brought into contact with the workpiece and as a result, metal chips are removed to achieve the desired shape.
Learn more about CNC turning from our comprehensive guide on our engineering blog.
A standard CNC lathe has 2 axes: X and Z. This means that the fixed cutting tools can move along the side of the part and to and from. However, there are more advanced CNC turning machines available that enable the lathe to move across the job. The benefit of an added Y axis is that it allows to machine holes, keyways and other features that are not on the centerline of the component.
The different operations CNC lathes can perform include but are not limited to lathing, drilling, boring and threading. Today, large CNC turning centres may include both CNC milling and turning capabilities. Milling machines add an extra layer of capabilities, making these machines really powerful for creating intricate parts.
Modern CNC machining centres guarantee tight tolerances and high repeatability to create precision machined parts that are virtually identical every time, all this with rapid turnaround times.
Ekinsun’s CNC turning service guarantees access to a wide range of CNC lathe machines with various capabilities, which should satisfy your precision machining needs in the most cost-effective way.
